Seeing my little brother graduate today and give a valedictorian speech today was absolutely amazing. I think that despite the hope my family and I have always had for him, we always were unsure what effect his autism would have on him, not knowing how far he would be able to go. Lee exceeded our wildest dreams. He has thrived in school and has come so far. I remember being really young when we were living in New York and bringing him to schools for kids with similar needs or seeing him work with therapists. We had so many therapists coming to our house to work intensely with him. My parents even flew specialists out to Arizona when we moved. I never really understood any of it because him and I are only two years apart so I was also young. But now that I am older and have seen him grow and change into an amazing young man. We grew up with Lee having stereotypical autistic behaviors, things like flapping or other things that I see all the time in kids I have worked with or are currently work with, completely diminish in him. He has come such a long way. From not speaking, to giving a speech as the valedictorian of his high school. I can’t believe how far he has come and I am so incredibly proud to be his sister. I don’t think I will ever be able to truly express that in words.
